Fertility treatment is one of the most emotionally and physically demanding experiences a couple can go through. Over 20 years of clinical practice, I have worked alongside many patients navigating IVF cycles — and acupuncture has become a meaningful part of how I support them.
What the research shows
A substantial body of research supports acupuncture as a complementary approach to IVF. Studies suggest acupuncture may improve uterine blood flow, regulate hormonal balance, reduce the stress response — which itself can interfere with implantation — and support overall reproductive function in both women and men.
The integrative approach is increasingly recognized by gynecologists and reproductive specialists. Many now actively recommend acupuncture alongside IVF cycles.
How I work with fertility patients
My approach to fertility support draws on Traditional Chinese Medicine alongside the advanced techniques I have trained in. Treatment is tailored to the individual's pattern — whether the focus is improving egg quality, supporting the uterine lining, reducing anxiety around the cycle, or supporting male fertility parameters.
For male fertility, acupuncture has been shown to support sperm quality, motility, and count — an often overlooked dimension of fertility treatment that I address directly.
When to start
Ideally, acupuncture for fertility support begins 2–3 months before an IVF cycle to allow time to address underlying imbalances. However, acupuncture during the cycle itself — including on the day of embryo transfer — is also beneficial and commonly practiced.
