Acupuncture during pregnancy: what's safe, what helps

Pregnancy presents a unique therapeutic challenge: many of the symptoms that make pregnancy difficult — nausea, back pain, reflux, pelvic pain — are conditions where the usual medication options are limited or unavailable. This is one reason acupuncture has become increasingly popular during pregnancy.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

When performed by a trained and experienced practitioner, acupuncture is considered safe during pregnancy. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy — a qualified acupuncturist knows which these are. The treatment itself is gentle, and most pregnant patients find it deeply relaxing.

What acupuncture helps with during pregnancy

The conditions I treat most commonly during pregnancy include morning sickness and nausea (including hyperemesis gravidarum in more severe cases), acid reflux and heartburn, lower back pain and sciatica, pelvic girdle pain and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), fatigue and sleep difficulties, and anxiety.

SPD — pain at the front of the pelvis caused by the loosening of the pelvic ligaments — is a condition where medication offers little relief and acupuncture often makes a significant difference. I have treated many patients through this condition over the years.

When to seek treatment

Acupuncture can be used throughout pregnancy. For nausea, early treatment (first trimester) is most effective. For physical conditions like back pain and SPD, treatment can begin whenever symptoms appear.

If you are pregnant and considering acupuncture, you may also want to read about fertility support for context on how acupuncture fits into the broader reproductive health picture.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your specific situation.
