Integrated Treatment Systems

Our Acupuncture Methods

Four complementary acupuncture systems combined with modern techniques for maximum therapeutic benefit

For educational purposes only. Acupuncture is a complementary therapy and not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider for diagnosis and treatment. Individual results may vary.

Four Integrated Acupuncture Systems

Rather than using a single approach, we combine four complementary acupuncture systems for synergistic results. Each system brings unique benefits and mechanisms. By integrating them, we access multiple pathways to restore balance and adapt treatment to your specific pattern. This integrated approach makes acupuncture treatment in Boca Raton more effective and responsive to how your body heals.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been refined over 3,000+ years of clinical observation and practice. Modern research now validates what ancient practitioners discovered through careful observation — acupuncture works through measurable physiological mechanisms AND through the elegant logic of TCM theory. Individual results may vary.

1. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — The Foundation

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the philosophical and diagnostic framework underlying all acupuncture practice. Based on 3,000+ years of clinical observation, TCM treats the whole person by balancing energy (qi) and blood through meridian pathways. Your unique pattern determines which organs and meridians to treat, making every acupuncture treatment personalized to your body's needs.

In TCM, we ask: Why do you have this symptom? Not just what is the diagnosis, but what pattern created it. Is your pain from heat or cold? Deficiency or excess? Stagnation or weakness? The answer determines our treatment strategy.

TCM pattern diagnosis combines:

This TCM foundation ensures that acupuncture addresses the root cause, not just symptoms. That's why two people with "back pain" may receive different treatments — their underlying patterns are different.

2. Master Tung's Acupuncture — Complex Medical Issues

Master Tung's is a highly specialized system using distal (distant) points — often treating the arm and leg to address complex conditions elsewhere in the body. If your neck hurts, we might needle the hand. If your knee is painful, we might needle the foot. This counterintuitive approach creates powerful therapeutic shifts.

Master Tung's acupuncture is particularly powerful for treating:

Master Tung's training is highly specialized and requires intensive study. The system works through specific anatomical and energetic principles that address the root of complex medical conditions. The distal point approach accesses deeper healing pathways and often produces significant improvement rapidly — sometimes after just one or two treatments. Many practitioners consider Master Tung's the most effective system for stubborn, chronic conditions that haven't responded to other approaches.

3. Dr. Tan's Balance Method — Symmetry & Healing

Dr. Tan's Balance Method uses the principle of bilateral balance — treating the opposite side of the body from the problem. If your left shoulder hurts, we needle specific points on the right side. This creates a whole-body rebalancing effect.

The elegance of Dr. Tan's method lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. By establishing bilateral balance, we activate the body's natural symmetry healing response. Patients often report:

This method is especially valuable for patients who have had injuries, surgery, or chronic imbalances that have created compensation patterns in the body.

4. Auricular Acupuncture — The Ear Microsystem

Auricular Acupuncture — Treating the complete body map on the ear

The ear is a complete microsystem containing acupuncture points that correspond to every part of the body. One ear point might treat your lower back; another treats your stomach; another your stress response. Auricular acupuncture is incredibly versatile and effective.

This system excels for:

We often combine auricular acupuncture with the other three systems for enhanced, synergistic results. The ear's accessibility and responsiveness make it a cornerstone of integrated treatment.

Complementary Treatment Techniques

Beyond needle acupuncture, we use complementary techniques from Chinese Medicine to enhance treatment outcomes. These work synergistically with acupuncture to deepen healing:

Electroacupuncture

After needles are placed, we can attach small electrical leads to specific needles. This gentle electrical stimulation enhances the acupuncture signal, creating stronger therapeutic effects. Electroacupuncture is particularly valuable for nerve pain, musculoskeletal conditions, and chronic pain that's resistant to needles alone.

The frequency and intensity are customized to your condition — some situations call for gentle stimulation, while others benefit from stronger signals. Electroacupuncture accelerates healing and often produces faster pain relief than traditional needling alone.

Cupping Therapy

Cups create suction on the skin to release deep muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and reduce inflammation. Cupping is often used for back pain, shoulder tension, neck stiffness, and sports injuries — areas where muscle tension and circulation stagnation are the primary problem.

Cupping works by bringing stagnant blood and fluids to the surface, allowing fresh circulation to flood the area. Patients often feel significant relief after just one cupping session. We frequently combine cupping with acupuncture for maximum effect on muscle-related pain.

Herbal Medicine & Moxibustion

Custom herbal formulas support acupuncture treatment from within. Chinese herbs (FDA-regulated dietary supplements) address imbalances at a deeper level, extending healing between sessions and strengthening your immune system.

Moxibustion uses heat from a special herb (mugwort) to warm acupuncture points and meridians. The TDP heat lamp provides similar therapeutic warmth in a modern format — ideal for cold-type pain, circulatory issues, and warming the body's energy. Herbal medicine and moxibustion extend acupuncture's healing power beyond the treatment room.

Your Treatment Process

The Four-Session Assessment

Sessions 1-4: We apply acupuncture from all four systems while carefully observing how your body responds. Do symptoms improve? How quickly? What patterns emerge? By session 4, we have comprehensive information about your healing capacity and optimal treatment strategy.

Frequency & Customization: Some patients need to continue twice-weekly treatment, while some will reduce to once a week. Usually we're talking about 10 sessions total, but some patients will require more. It all depends on how fast you improve. Your individual response guides us.

Maintenance: Once you've reached your goals, optional monthly acupuncture helps you stay balanced and prevent relapse. This preventive approach keeps you feeling your best year-round.

How Acupuncture Works — Science & Ancient Wisdom

From neuroscience: Needle stimulation triggers the release of endorphins (natural pain relievers), promotes circulation, reduces inflammation, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest-and-digest response). Research also shows that acupuncture improves mood by modulating neurotransmitters and reducing stress hormones.

From Chinese medicine: Acupuncture restores the balanced flow of qi (energy) along meridian pathways. When qi flows freely, the body heals naturally. When qi is blocked or deficient, pain and illness result. The thousands of years of TCM practice identified which points create which shifts in energy flow.

Both explanations are true. Acupuncture works through measurable physiological mechanisms discovered by modern science AND through the elegant energy logic of Traditional Chinese Medicine developed over millennia. Individual results may vary.

How We Diagnose Your Pattern

Tongue Diagnosis — Your tongue reveals your body's internal balance

Tongue Diagnosis: Your tongue reveals the health of your organs and the nature of your imbalance. The color, coating, shape, and moisture of your tongue tell us whether your condition stems from heat/cold, deficiency/excess, or other patterns. A pale tongue with thick coating means something completely different than a red tongue with no coating — and requires different treatment.

Pulse Diagnosis: Your pulse at the wrist holds information about the function of your organs and the flow of qi. Different pulse qualities — fast, slow, wiry, weak, deep, superficial, choppy — point to specific imbalances. Pulse diagnosis takes years to master and is a cornerstone of accurate TCM practice.

Patient Interview: Every detail matters — how your pain feels, when it's worst, what makes it better or worse, your digestion, sleep, emotional state, temperature preferences, and medical history. Together, these paint a complete picture of your unique pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin (about 0.3mm) — much thinner than injection needles. You might feel a slight prick during insertion, then relaxation. Most patients fall asleep during treatment, which tells you how relaxing it is.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients benefit from twice-weekly acupuncture for the first four sessions to assess response. After that, we create a personalized plan based on your progress. Many conditions improve within 4-10 treatments; chronic issues may take longer. Individual results may vary.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. When performed by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile needles, acupuncture is very safe. Side effects are minimal — occasionally mild soreness or bruising at needle sites. Always tell your acupuncturist about medications or medical conditions.

Will acupuncture interfere with my medications?

Acupuncture is generally safe alongside most medications. However, if you're taking medications for your condition, discuss acupuncture with your prescribing physician. If acupuncture helps reduce your symptoms significantly, your doctor can advise whether medication adjustments may be appropriate. We never recommend stopping medications — that's always your physician's decision.

What should I do before my first appointment?

Eat lightly before treatment (not on a full stomach). Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid vigorous exercise the day of your appointment. Come 10 minutes early to complete health history. Most importantly, come with an open mind — acupuncture works best when you're relaxed.

How much does acupuncture cost?

We offer cash-pay treatment with detailed superbills for insurance reimbursement. Acupuncture is also eligible for HSA/FSA/HRA accounts. Pricing varies by treatment complexity. Contact us for details or schedule a consultation.

Do you accept insurance?

We operate as a cash-pay practice and provide itemized superbills that many patients submit to their insurance for reimbursement (depending on your plan). We accept HSA, FSA, and HRA funds. Many plans cover acupuncture — check with your insurer.

What makes your approach different?

We combine four complementary acupuncture systems rather than using one approach. With 20+ years of clinical experience and training from world-class institutions (Chengdu University Hospital, Master Tung's intensive, Dr. Tan's studies), we customize each treatment to your unique pattern. Your individual response guides us. This integrated methodology creates results faster and more reliably than single-system approaches.
